'King Cake', or Galette des Rois, is our favourite way to celebrate Epiphany, which comes from the Biblical story of the Three Kings bearing gifts to Jesus.
This typical French galette is made with a top and bottom layer of flaky puff pastry, filled with a delicious custard-y cream of almond frangipane mixed with a jam of kumquats and oranges sandwiched in between.
Instead of the traditional lucky charm made from porcelain baked inside, we have hidden a safe-to-eat almond as the lucky charm inside the cake. Whoever finds the hidden almond (lucky charm) is crowned “king” or “queen” for the day.
A paper crown and additional lucky charms are packed separately to complete the experience.
